Plateaux Region is the green, hilly interior — Kpalimé sits at the base of Mount Agou and the air is actually cool compared to the coast. The craft markets and waterfalls draw a small stream of French and German tourists, meaning locals here have positive reference points for outsiders without being jaded. The Ewe people in this region are some of the most commercially savvy and educated in Togo. If you want real country without total infrastructure deprivation, this is your spot.

Kpalimé has a backpacker-lite reputation it mostly lives up to — it's pleasant, the surroundings are scenic, and the locals are friendly without being performatively so. The social upside caps out pretty quickly though; it's a small town and everyone knows everyone. You can have a great few days here as part of a broader Togo trip but it doesn't sustain longer stays well.

Plateaux Region is primarily agricultural and the towns outside Kpalimé have very little going on for a foreign man without specific interests in hiking or craft tourism. The social options are thin and the lack of anonymity in small towns means you're always slightly on display. Pleasant enough to pass through, actively boring to sit in.
