Sulina

High score (8-10) · Your profile
Sulina is the most eastern point of Romania and the only way to get there is a three-hour ferry up the Sulina Channel from Tulcea — no roads exist. In the 19th century it was a genuinely cosmopolitan international free port with consulates from a dozen European nations, and the European Danube Commission was headquartered here; the multicultural cemetery, with headstones in Greek, Russian, English, French, Turkish, and Romanian, is one of the most striking artifacts of that era. Today the town has about 3,000 residents and a handful of summer guesthouses and cafes, with a few hundred tourists passing through in peak season. The history is fascinating but the modern social reality is thin — mostly elderly permanent residents and summer nature tourists — and outside July-August the place is nearly abandoned.
Mid score (6-8)
Sulina's 19th-century history as a multicultural European free port is genuinely remarkable — the crumbling street grid, the consulate buildings, and the polyglot cemetery tell a story of cosmopolitan river commerce that's completely at odds with the quiet, depopulated town you find today. Summer brings some tourists doing the delta circuit, and the waterfront cafes are pleasant. But the permanent population is small and aging, and there's no real social scene. A fascinating historical visit, not a social destination.
Lower score (below 6)
Sulina is accessible only by a three-hour ferry, has 3,000 residents mostly elderly, and operates primarily as a summer nature tourism point. The once-cosmopolitan character of the 19th-century port is entirely historical — the town today is quiet, depopulated, and closed for most of the year. A foreign man gets interesting ruins and no social opportunities. Cold.
