Niculitel is known in Romanian wine circles for its DOC appellation — the vineyards here on the limestone hillsides produce some of the county's best reds, and the early Christian basilica unearthed here contains the remains of four Christian martyrs from the Diocletianic persecution. The wine heritage is real and gives the town more cultural character than most communes in the county. But the population is only a few thousand, there's no active wine tourism scene at a social level, and a foreign man here is still very much out of context. Worth a visit for the history and a bottle of local wine; no social scene.
