Certeze became internationally known for the phenomenon of Oaș construction workers returning from France and building 3-5 story ornate mansions in their mountain valley — the visual result is genuinely surreal and tells you something real about the community's relationship with outside earnings. A Western man is unusual here in a community that has concrete experience with Western money. The folk tradition is still intact. But this is one of the most traditional and closed communities in Romania.
