Zalău is the economic capital of Sălaj and draws workers and young people from across the county who'd otherwise be stuck in the villages. The wage gap is stark — average local salaries run around 3,000–3,500 RON a month — so a western income puts you in a completely different bracket. There's a functional bar strip along Mihai Viteazu and enough cafes that socializing is possible, and locals in their 20s and 30s are noticeably more open than the village generation. It's not Cluj, but as a base for exploring this corner of Romania it gives you something real to work with.

Worth a short visit, not worth building a base.
