Hangu commune sits on the shore of the Bicaz reservoir — Lacul Izvorul Muntelui — one of Romania's largest artificial lakes, created when the Bistrița River was dammed in the 1950s and 60s. The dam displaced entire valley communities and the current settlement is relocated, which gives the area a certain rootlessness. There is some summer lake tourism and a few guesthouses, but outside of peak summer it is very quiet. The population is small and the social dynamic is seasonal visitor-based rather than anything a foreigner can build on.
