Novaci is the gateway to Transalpina, marketed as the highest road in Romania, and that geography brings a real summer tourist flow through a city of around 7,000 people — Romanian and foreign road-trippers stopping here for fuel, food, and lodging before or after driving the mountain pass north toward Sibiu county. There is functional tourism infrastructure: guesthouses, a few restaurants, and more social mixing in July and August than you will find in any other Gorj settlement outside the county capital. Outside of summer the tourist flow collapses and Novaci reverts to a quiet provincial city with limited social life and few reasons for an outsider to linger.
