Motru grew rapidly in the communist era as a planned coal-industry city and has been contracting economically ever since mine production slowed and jobs were cut, leaving a city of around 22,000 that carries the visual and atmospheric weight of post-industrial decline. The downtown has a few shops and bars that cater to the local workforce, but the social options are thin and the city's economic depression has driven away much of the younger generation that would otherwise give a foreign man something to work with. You get automatic curiosity here as a foreigner, but there is not much social infrastructure to channel it through.
