Santiago do Cacém sits between the Alentejo interior and the Costa Vicentina — the westernmost stretch of the Alentejo coast, some of the most protected and undeveloped coastline in Western Europe. The town itself has a real Moorish castle, a functioning commercial center, and agricultural money behind it. The adjacent beach towns of Santo André and Lagoa de Santo André draw a Portuguese surf-and-camping crowd that is younger and more open to meeting people.
