Alcoutim
8.0
High score (8-10) · Your profile
Alcoutim is one of the most dramatically underpopulated municipalities in Portugal, sitting on the Guadiana River across from Sanlúcar de Guadiana in Spain. The landscape and slow pace can appeal to a certain type of older local woman if you're genuinely embedded in the community for months. The cross-border ferry makes day trips to Spain easy.
Mid score (6-8)
Alcoutim's riverside setting is genuinely beautiful and the cross-border dynamic with Spain creates some unusual social texture, but the dating pool is effectively nonexistent for most men. The population skews heavily toward retirement age and the young left long ago for Faro or Portimão. Useful as a base for nature, not for social life.
Lower score (below 6)
Alcoutim is one of the fastest-depopulating parishes in Portugal — nearly 3,000 square kilometers with only around 2,600 people, most of them elderly. There are almost no women of dating age present, and those who remain are deeply embedded in family and community networks that don't include outsiders. Beautiful place to drive through, not somewhere you live.
