Mourão is the access point for the Portuguese side of the Alqueva reservoir — technically the largest artificial lake in Western Europe — and summer brings genuine lake tourism that gives the area seasonal life it otherwise completely lacks. The reservoir is legitimately impressive and the water sports and fishing scene draws Portuguese and Spanish visitors from across the border. A foreign man who arrives in summer with a boat or outdoor kit will find more social activity than the town's 3,000 permanent residents would suggest. Outside of summer, the math changes entirely.

The Alqueva dam and reservoir put Mourão on the map as a summer tourism destination, but the town itself is tiny (~3,000) and the tourist season is short. The area was already sparsely populated before the dam flooded much of the surrounding agricultural land in 2002, and the recovery has been slow. There's genuine life here in July and August around the lake; the rest of the year is quiet in the way that very small Alentejo towns are quiet. Plan accordingly.

Mourão is one of the smallest and most demographically hollowed-out municipalities in the district — the Alqueva dam flooded a significant portion of the surrounding farmland when it filled in 2002, and the area never fully recovered in population terms. About 3,000 people remain, most elderly, in an agricultural community that is not oriented toward outsiders in any meaningful way. Summer lake tourism is real but thin, and the window is short. Outside of July and August there is no social life here by any reasonable definition.
