Estremoz is one of the more functional small cities in the Alentejo — the Saturday market is one of the biggest rural markets in southern Portugal and draws people from across the region, which creates genuine social mixing that the smaller towns lack. The upper town castle and pousada bring tourism from Lisbon and abroad, and the marble trade means business visitors are common. A foreign man who shows up with curiosity about the market culture and some Portuguese will find people genuinely interested in talking. Still a small city of ~14,000, but it has more going on than almost anywhere else in the district outside Évora.

Estremoz has legitimate pull as a regional market town — the Saturday fair has been running for centuries and brings agricultural producers, antique sellers, and buyers from across the district. The castle district is attractive and the pousada draws some upscale tourism. But it's fundamentally a small working city where the social circles are established and tight, and the evenings outside of weekends are quiet. Good for a weekend visit; the scene is thin for anything longer.

Outside of that, the cafe culture is the entertainment and the communities are closed enough that an outsider takes time to crack. The upper town is genuinely attractive but the tourist infrastructure is limited, and the younger population has been bleeding out to Évora and Lisbon for decades. Not hostile, just slow.
