Alandroal sits right on the Spanish border along the Guadiana River and genuinely punches above its weight for outdoor life — the Alqueva reservoir is right there, the cork oak landscape is legitimately beautiful, and you're in one of the least-visited corners of the Alentejo. A foreign man with means and a reason to be here — cycling, birding, slow travel — will stand out in a way that generates real curiosity. The population is small (~6,000 across a large rural area) but the cross-border proximity to Extremadura means locals are more accustomed to outsiders than you'd expect. If you have a specific reason to be here and can handle total isolation from nightlife, it works.
