Praia de Mira, the coastal village connected to the inland town by the Barrinha de Mira lagoon, is a legitimate surf beach with a laid-back campground culture that draws young Portuguese and Dutch/German campers through summer. The lagoon-to-sea geography is genuinely unusual on the Portuguese coast, and the beach scene here is low-key enough that a foreign man is a positive anomaly rather than one of many. The boardwalk and beach bar scene in July-August is small but functional. Better value socially than bigger beach towns where you're just another tourist.
