Águeda gets an annual influx of visitors every July for Agitágueda, when the main street gets covered in a canopy of colorful umbrellas and the town actually has a pulse for a few weeks. That festival draws enough outsiders that being foreign doesn't immediately mark you as an alien, and Portuguese women here are curious rather than closed off. The industrial base keeps disposable income reasonable, so you're not dealing with economic desperation or the reverse snobbery of a resort town.
