A long-term posting here creates genuine, if limited, social possibilities that don't exist anywhere else in the DPRK. The Yanggakdo and Koryo hotels cater to foreign residents, and the small international community is tight-knit. Still a hard environment — but the only one in the country with any ceiling at all.

The city has an elite class and some real urban energy, but none of it is accessible to a foreign man on a standard visit. You will leave having met no one and done nothing outside the script.
