Yangdok got international attention when Kim Jong-un personally oversaw construction of the Yangdok Health and Recreation Center — a resort with ski slopes and water slides that opened in 2019 as a Juche-branded leisure showcase. It briefly appeared on foreign tour operator lists as a potential destination. A handful of outsiders have visited the resort under escort. The surrounding mountainous county is otherwise completely closed, and the resort itself is primarily a facility for DPRK cadres and their families on state-sponsored breaks.
