Sunch'ŏn
8.1
High score (8-10) · Your profile
Sunchon is home to the Sunchon Vinalon Complex, where North Korea produces vinalon — a synthetic fiber made from coal and limestone, invented by DPRK chemist Ri Sung-gi in the 1950s and held up as a triumph of Juche self-reliance. The complex is one of the province's flagship industrial sites and has been inspected by Kim Jong-un. State delegations from sympathetic countries have toured it. Social access beyond the factory floor doesn't exist.
Mid score (6-8)
The Vinalon Complex gives Sunchon a specific place in DPRK industrial history and makes it a showcase site for the Juche self-reliance ideology in manufacturing. It's a real chemical operation producing real output, which means technical delegations have seen it. But the ideological significance means it's more surveilled, not less, and the surrounding city is a classic DPRK industrial center with no social space for outsiders.
Lower score (below 6)
Sunchon's Vinalon Complex is famous inside North Korea as a symbol of Juche industrial independence — which makes it a high-security showcase that foreign men definitely don't wander through. The city around it is a closed industrial town. Even the official delegation visits are tightly managed affairs. Nothing here for any outsider operating outside a state-approved program.
