Hyangsan
8.1
High score (8-10) · Your profile
Hyangsan is one of the few counties in North Pyongan that foreigners actually visit — Myohyangsan is a designated tourist mountain and home to the International Friendship Exhibition, a massive underground complex displaying gifts given to Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il by world leaders. Tours here are tightly scripted and typically involve visiting the exhibition halls and hiking designated trails. Even so, you are escorted throughout, and genuine interaction with locals is off the table.
Mid score (6-8)
Hyangsan has functioning tourist infrastructure by DPRK standards — hotels, mountain trails, and the propaganda showpiece of the Friendship Exhibition. North Korean tourists from Pyongyang also visit Myohyangsan, meaning there is slightly more visible social activity here than in purely agricultural counties. Foreign men here are curiosities rather than participants; any conversation happens through an interpreter under state supervision.
Lower score (below 6)
Even in Hyangsan, the most visitor-accessible county in North Pyongan, everything is staged. The Friendship Exhibition is a monument to the Kim personality cult, and your visit there is structured as a show of respect. You travel in a group, stay in a designated guesthouse, and interact with exactly who the state allows you to interact with. The mountains are real and genuinely impressive, but the social environment is a performance.
