Kŭmho is the industrial satellite city adjacent to Hamhŭng, home to the Hungnam fertilizer and chemical complex that was one of the largest industrial facilities in colonial Korea. The facility was the site of the famous 1950 Hungnam evacuation, where nearly 100,000 civilian refugees were evacuated by US naval forces. The city today is a closed industrial zone with no foreign visitor access.
