Jangjin is the site of the Chosin Reservoir — called Jangjin Lake in North Korean geography — where one of the most brutal battles of the Korean War was fought in 1950. American and South Korean veterans have occasionally accessed this area on official commemorative visits, which is essentially the only foreign entry that has ever happened here. Outside of that very narrow diplomatic channel, this mountainous county is completely inaccessible.

Jangjin County is extremely remote — high elevation, harsh winters, and among the least populated areas of South Hamgyong Province. The reservoir and surrounding mountains were a strategic military zone during the Korean War and remain sensitive territory. Foreign access is virtually nonexistent, and there is no civilian social environment that an outsider could enter.
