Hamhŭng is the second largest city in North Korea and the industrial capital of the country's chemical sector — the Hungnam complex here was one of the largest chemical plants in Asia during the colonial era. Very occasionally it appears on specialty tour itineraries, but visits are tightly controlled and consist of designated monuments, a school, and possibly a textile factory. You won't be meeting anyone freely.
