Węgorzewo is one of the quieter entry points to the Masurian Lakes district, sitting on Lake Mamry (the second-largest lake in Poland), and it hosts the annual Węgorzewo boat rally and has a real sailing marina culture. The town is small (around 11,000) but the lake setting and summer tourism infrastructure make social encounters genuinely accessible during peak season. German tourists in particular come here in numbers, which normalizes foreign visitors. The town feels less saturated than Giżycko which is only 30km away.
