Sandomierz is one of the most visually striking small cities in Poland — the Old Town sits on a high escarpment above the Vistula, and that physical distinctiveness has made it a legitimate domestic tourist destination. The TV series 'Ojciec Mateusz' (Polish 'Father Brown') was filmed entirely here, which brought the town national recognition and a steady stream of visitors curious to walk the filming locations. Tourism means social openings: people passing through, locals used to outsiders, a small bar scene that actually has turnover. For a foreign man, the combination of tourism traffic and small-city social dynamics is better here than almost anywhere else in the voivodeship.

Sandomierz gets real domestic tourism because of its Old Town and the Father Mateusz filming location, which gives it more social activity than a city of 24,000 would normally sustain. Outside of tourist season, though, it settles back into being a quiet provincial town where social life is contained and the pool is limited. The setting is legitimately good and the people are accustomed to visitors, but you're not going to find a thriving year-round scene. Good for a seasonal visit, less ideal as a full-time base.
