Jastrzębie-Zdrój is one of the more unusual cities in Poland — it was a minor spa resort (the name means 'hawk spring') before the Communists discovered coal underneath it in the 1960s and built a mining boomtown on top of the springs. Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa (JSW), Poland's largest coking coal producer, is headquartered here and its presence defines the city entirely. There's no meaningful social scene for outsiders, no nightlife beyond local pubs, and no mechanism for meeting people outside the mining industry social orbit. A foreign man here is in the wrong city.
