Stalowa Wola was built from scratch in 1937-1938 as part of Poland's Central Industrial District — the government literally planned and constructed the entire city to house workers for the Huta Stalowa Wola steel mill. The city grid, the housing blocks, and the whole social structure were designed by state planners. With about 60,000 people it's the second-largest city in Podkarpackie, but its DNA is entirely working-class industrial and it's never developed a diverse economic or cultural identity.

The steel mill still operates and is significant — HSW now produces armored vehicles and military equipment in addition to construction machinery, and the defense contracts have kept employment relatively stable. The city has a functioning service sector and decent infrastructure for its size. But it lacks a university, has limited nightlife, and the social culture is defined by the factory economy. A foreigner here for work in the defense supply chain has context; without that, not much.
