Sanok has an unusually strong cultural identity for a city its size (~38,000) — it's home to one of Poland's best open-air folk architecture museums (the Sanok skansen), a significant collection of Ruthenian/Byzantine icons at the local museum, and is associated with the painter Zdzisław Beksiński, whose dark fantasy work has a global cult following. The Autosan bus factory defined the city's industrial identity for decades though it's been through hard times. Interesting place to visit for a day or two, but the social scene is limited.

Sanok has a state university branch and a small student population that gives it slightly more life than a purely industrial town. The outdoor access to the Bieszczady and Low Beskyds is excellent, which draws some tourism. But it's a conservative Carpathian city with tight local social networks, and a foreign man gets looked at with curiosity more than anything else.

Outside of its museums and Beksiński connection, Sanok is a struggling post-industrial city losing population as Autosan's fortunes have declined. The economy is thin, young people leave, and the social scene can't support much beyond local life. An outsider here without a specific connection or outdoor mission has very limited options.
