Mielec was purpose-built in the late 1930s as part of Poland's Central Industrial District (COP) program — the government literally constructed the city to house aircraft manufacturing workers. The WSK Mielec plant later became a Sikorsky helicopter facility and still produces helicopters for the Polish military and international customers. It has one of Poland's largest Special Economic Zones, which has attracted some foreign companies, giving it marginally more international presence than most Podkarpackie cities its size.
