Sitangkai
8.6
Lower score (below 6)
Sitangkai is built almost entirely on stilts above the Celebes Sea, about 37 kilometers from Malaysian Sabah, and travel within the town is entirely by small wooden boat. The Bajau community here has lived on and above the water for generations and is genuinely unlike anywhere else in the Philippines in terms of physical structure. But it is also deeply Muslim, extraordinarily remote, and has no accommodation or services for outsiders. A foreign man arriving here would be the subject of community-wide attention with zero social upside — the novelty of the place doesn't translate into access.
