Siasi
8.6
High score (8-10) · Your profile
Siasi is the main town on Siasi island and functions as the commercial hub for the central Sulu island chain, with a port that connects dozens of smaller islands and a market economy more developed than most of Sulu. Tausug and Sama-speaking communities mix here, and there's a level of commercial activity and social openness that doesn't exist in the more rural municipalities. The security risk that applies to all of Sulu applies here too, but if there's any municipality in the province that has marginal upside for a foreign man, Siasi is probably it.
Mid score (6-8)
Siasi has a functioning port, regular boat connections to other island groups, and a market that serves a large catchment of outer islands. The town has more commercial life than most of Sulu's municipalities and some level of comfort with outsiders from inter-island trade. The problem is that the province-wide security advisory applies and a foreign man in Siasi is still highly visible with limited infrastructure support.
Lower score (below 6)
Siasi is the largest municipality in the central Sulu island chain and has more economic activity than most, but it still operates within the security environment that has made Sulu province a Level 4 Do Not Travel designation. The Abu Sayyaf Group's reach extends across the Sulu archipelago including areas around Siasi island. A foreign man here draws attention from all quarters and has no practical support structure if something goes wrong.
