Selangor is the most economically developed state in Malaysia and surrounds KL on all sides — Shah Alam, Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya, and Klang are all part of this continuous urban region. PJ in particular has a large, educated Chinese-Malaysian middle class with a genuine bar and dining scene, and the women here are urban, English-speaking, and have the professional credentials that make them confident about what they want. The density is high enough that apps work extremely well here. Living in Selangor while treating KL as your social center is how most expats actually operate.

Selangor is suburban Malaysia at scale — highly functional, economically solid, and not particularly romantic. The social life in PJ and Subang competes well with KL proper but you're operating in strip malls and driving everywhere, which changes the texture of how you meet people. The Shah Alam corridor is heavily Malay and Muslim and operates on an entirely different social register. You can have good results here but the environment is fragmented in ways that require local knowledge to navigate.

Selangor outside the Chinese-majority suburbs is conservative and domestically oriented — Shah Alam is one of the most Islamically conservative cities in Malaysia and the social environment there for outsiders is limited. Even in the more open areas like PJ, you're in an affluent suburb with established communities and women who have no particular need to meet a foreigner. Works better as a support environment for KL social life than as a standalone destination.
