Sarawak is the larger of Malaysia's two Borneo states and Kuching is its capital — a riverside city that punches above its size in terms of livability and social ease. The population is genuinely multi-ethnic with significant Chinese, Iban, and other indigenous representation, and the non-Muslim proportion is higher than any state in peninsular Malaysia. Kuching has a real cafe culture, a tight expat community, and women who are socially accessible in ways that the west coast states often aren't. If you're posted here or spending extended time, the city rewards it.

The diversity and relative openness are real advantages, but the size means you'll exhaust the active social circuit faster than in KL or Penang.
