Pahang is Malaysia's largest state and its interior is almost entirely jungle and national park — the social opportunities are concentrated in Cameron Highlands (tea country, backpacker-friendly), Cherating on the coast, and Kuantan as the administrative center. Cameron Highlands draws a specific type of traveler and has a low-key scene that rewards extended stays. Kuantan has a real local population and being a rare Western face there actually counts for something in a way it wouldn't in KL.
