Kedah is predominantly Malay and Muslim with a conservative social culture — Alor Setar is the capital and it functions like a proper regional city where people live quietly and close to their community. If you speak some Malay or make the cultural accommodations, there are women here who genuinely appreciate an outsider who respects the context rather than running from it. The rice fields and slower pace filter out the tourists, which means the people you meet are not performing for visitors. Not a dating hotspot, but if you're playing a long game with genuine cultural interest it has something.
