That cross-border flow means women here are more internationally aware than most of peninsular Malaysia outside KL, and a Western guy isn't a novelty but he's still rare enough to stand out. The city itself is sprawling and unglamorous, which keeps the pretension low — people are direct and a little more grounded than KL. The Chinese-Malaysian community here is large and the social scene is accessible if you put in the legwork to find it.
