Malaysia runs on a split social economy — KL is modern and aspirational, while the coasts and islands draw a steady flow of backpackers and long-termers who already want to be there. Western men do well here partly because the local dating culture skews toward education and upward mobility, and an outsider with money and stability reads as a genuine upgrade.
