Dornod is Mongolia's far east — flat steppe stretching to the Manchurian border, with Choibalsan as the aimag center sitting on old Soviet infrastructure. The Buir Lake area and the great Mongolian gazelle migration draw a niche set of nature travelers, and the local guides and outfitters who work with them are accustomed to foreign visitors. Cross-border trade with China and Russia has given Choibalsan slightly more of an international character than you'd expect from its size.
