Tanintharyi Region's Myeik Archipelago is one of Southeast Asia's last genuinely remote island chains — dive operators and liveaboard boats have brought a small but consistent flow of serious adventure travelers, and the Moken sea nomad communities add a cultural layer that makes the region genuinely fascinating. Dawei, the region's main city, has a different energy from northern Myanmar — the southern Thai cultural influence creates a slightly more relaxed social atmosphere and women here are less guarded than in the Bamar heartland. Foreign men who invest in Dawei rather than just transiting to the islands find a surprisingly open small-city environment.
