El Fuerte is the western gateway to the Copper Canyon rail journey (the Chepe), which means it gets a steady stream of international travelers — primarily North American and European adventure tourists — passing through on their way into the Sierra Tarahumara. The colonial-era town center has genuine character: cobblestone streets, a 17th century plaza, and boutique hotels that cater specifically to foreign visitors. Local families used to hosting outsiders make the social environment unusually relaxed for a town of its size, and the scale is small enough that you meet everyone within a day.

El Fuerte is a pass-through more than a stay destination — most travelers spend one or two nights waiting for the train.
