Tlalpujahua is one of the most interesting small towns in Michoacán — a former silver mining town in the mountains bordering Estado de México that reinvented itself as the Christmas ornament capital of Mexico (and arguably the Americas). Over 100 family workshops produce hand-blown glass ornaments sold throughout North America, and foreign buyers visit year-round. The preserved mining-era architecture on cobblestone streets creates a genuinely beautiful town. Gets significant domestic tourism from Mexico City day-trippers (it's 2.5 hours from the capital) and foreign ornament industry buyers. Women here have real exposure to outsiders through the ornament economy.
