Nuevo Parangaricutiro has one of the most dramatic origin stories of any town in Mexico — the original village was completely buried under lava when the Paricutín volcano erupted suddenly in 1943 out of a cornfield, and the church tower still sticking out of the hardened lava field is one of the most surreal sights in the country. The rebuilt town sits nearby and has a genuine tourist economy around the volcanic ruins. Near Uruapan, so has good access to urban infrastructure. Foreign tourists come specifically to see the church-in-lava and horse rides up to the volcano crater are offered by local guides.

The volcano tourism is real and draws consistent visitors, but it's a single-attraction destination. Once you've done the lava field and the church the town itself is small.
