ValledeChalcoSolidaridad
8.4
High score (8-10) · Your profile
Valle de Chalco Solidaridad was created in 1994 from Chalco as a specific government recognition of the massive squatter settlement that developed on the drained lakebed east of Mexico City — the name 'Solidaridad' was itself a political statement from the Salinas administration's social program. The municipality has over 350,000 people in conditions that remain very difficult. There is no social infrastructure for a foreign man here and significant security concerns in parts of the municipality.
Mid score (6-8)
Valle de Chalco has improved its infrastructure substantially since the 1990s — there are now paved streets, schools, and basic services across most of the municipality. The population is young, working class, and economically active in the informal sector. It functions as a bedroom community for Mexico City industrial employment.
Lower score (below 6)
Valle de Chalco is one of the most socially difficult environments in the entire metro area for an outsider — the density, the economic marginality, the informal settlement history, and the security environment in some colonias all combine to make it an environment where a foreign man without deep community roots faces constant friction. There is no social upside that couldn't be found more safely elsewhere.
