Atenco became internationally known after the 2006 conflict in which federal police used extreme force against flower vendors protesting the planned airport — the municipality has a strong, organized community resistance tradition that goes back to the fight against the old Texcoco airport and continues into the present. The new Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) was built partly on land near here, changing the economic dynamics.
