TalpadeAllende
8.4
High score (8-10) · Your profile
Talpa de Allende is one of the three major Marian pilgrimage sites in Jalisco (along with San Juan de los Lagos and Zapopan) — the Virgin of Talpa draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims annually. The pilgrimage trail through the Sierra Madre from Mascota is a genuine cultural experience. A foreigner engaging earnestly with the pilgrimage culture gets unusual access to a side of Mexico rarely seen.
Mid score (6-8)
A mountain pilgrimage town deep in the Sierra Madre with religious tourism as its economic base. Has some hotels and restaurants for pilgrims. Conservative but the pilgrim influx creates social movement at certain times of year.
Lower score (below 6)
Talpa de Allende is a deeply religious pilgrimage destination in the Sierra Madre with minimal social infrastructure beyond what serves the pilgrim economy. The permanent social culture is very conservative and traditional. Not a place for social connection beyond religious community.
