Xichú is one of Guanajuato's most remote municipalities — deep in the Sierra Gorda on the edge of the Querétaro border — and it's famous in Mexican folk music circles as the center of the son huasteco tradition. The annual Xichú music festival (Festival del Son Huasteco) draws musicians and folk music enthusiasts from across Mexico every January, and that one event creates a genuinely open, curious social environment even in an otherwise closed mountain town.
