Sava is not a region you come to for an easy social scene, but if you speak French and can handle rough logistics, the vanilla economy around Sambava has produced a local middle class that's genuinely distinct from the subsistence-level towns elsewhere in Madagascar. Foreigners are rare enough here that curiosity is real rather than transactional, and the northeast coast beaches around Masoala are some of the least-visited in the Indian Ocean. The people who succeed here are those who come with patience and a specific reason to be there.

The SAVA region is Madagascar's vanilla heartland — Sambava and Antalaha are where the trade money concentrates, and during harvest season there's more economic activity than the infrastructure suggests. Roads are among the worst in a country with terrible roads, flights from Tana are expensive and frequently cancelled, and the whole region runs on its own rhythms that have little to do with anything you might bring to the table.
