Oujda is the largest city in the Oriental and Mohammed I University feeds real student energy into the city — the cafes around the old medina and the Hay Al-Qods area have a younger, more educated population than anywhere else in the northeast. As a Western foreigner you're genuinely uncommon here, which in a university city works in your favor with the educated class who are curious about the outside world and not habituated to ignoring foreigners. There's actual nightlife infrastructure compared to the rest of the region. The train to Casablanca keeps it connected enough to feel viable.
