Guelmim is the main city of the region and calls itself the gateway to the Sahara — it has a real weekly camel market that still functions commercially, not for tourists, which tells you a lot about the authenticity of the place. The city has enough economic activity (fishing exports, agriculture, trade) that you find educated women with jobs and opinions. Foreign men are unusual here without being so rare it becomes suspicious, and there is a university presence that introduces younger, more open-minded women into the social mix. The cost of living is low and the social leverage a Western income provides is real.
