Neringa — the Curonian Spit — is one of the most visually impressive places in the entire Baltic, and in July and August the village of Nida fills with Lithuanian and German tourists who actually come here to relax and disconnect. Thomas Mann's former summer house is a legitimate landmark and gives you an easy cultural conversation opener with anyone who cares about European literature. The bar terraces in Nida get genuinely lively in peak summer, and the combination of resort atmosphere and small-town intimacy means you can meet the same people repeatedly in ways that build actual rapport. The real estate here is among the most expensive in Lithuania, which tells you something about who summers here.

Neringa has a permanent population under 3,000 across four small villages on a sand spit between the Baltic Sea and the Curonian Lagoon — this is not a place with a social scene, it's a place with a summer tourist season. From June through August there are genuine opportunities as Lithuanian city-dwellers and international visitors fill the guesthouses and beach bars in Nida. Outside that window the spit becomes almost completely quiet, the ferry from Klaipėda slows down, and the handful of year-round residents have no interest in entertaining passing strangers. Timing your visit to the peak season is non-negotiable.

Outside of summer, Neringa is functionally closed — most restaurants and accommodation shut down, the ferries run on reduced schedules, and the resident population retreats into a very tight local community. Even in season, the scale of the place is so small that if you make a bad impression somewhere it follows you within hours. The women who live here permanently are embedded in the local fishing and tourism trade families, and that's a closed social network for an outsider. Come here to enjoy the dunes and the lagoon, not to build a social life.
