Kretinga sits just 12km from Palanga and catches some overflow from the summer resort crowd, which is about the strongest argument for it. The town has a real local identity built around a Franciscan monastery and an old manor with a glass-enclosed winter garden — small cultural anchors that at least give you something to talk about. In summer the road between Kretinga and Palanga becomes active enough that the two blur together socially, and that proximity gives you access to the beach scene without paying Palanga prices to stay.
